The proper definition of a bistro is a type of small restaurant serving moderately priced simple meals in an unpretentious setting, especially in Paris. Bistros often just have hand-written menus and specialise in simple classic dishes such as steak au poivre, onion soup, and coq au vin.

As none of these establishments are in Paris, there may be some doubt about their absolute authenticity. However, I am sure that we are all prepared to stretch a point and accept the principle of Bistros in Warwickshire. I am also sure there are no doubts about the authenticity of their classically simple menus.

Badseys Cafe Bistro on the canalside at Hillmorton, for example, certainly seems to have wholeheartedly entered into the spirit of bistro-ism, having almost accidentally and fairly off-handedly, won a number of good-food awards. Très français.

Embargo in Stratford is just on the edge of the town centre and is quite lively, with a good sitting out area. More of a trendy bar than a bistro (and the menus are printed) but nevertheless worth a visit.
