The history of the Chinese in Britain goes back over 200 years, from when the first Chinese sailors came ashore at our seaports.

Liverpool has one of the oldest established Chinese communities in Europe which dates from when the East India Company established trading links with China in the 1830's, and by 1871, there were apparently 202 Chinese settled in Liverpool. Our familiarity with Chinese restaurants probably dates from the 1970's when there was a large influx of Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong.

I can certainly remember Chinese restaurants in 1960's and, as a student, I can remember my amazement at being able to get food at 3am in Liverpool's Chinatown.

The traditional Chinese restaurants in Warwickshire are still by far in the majority but, as with many traditional cuisines, the younger second and third generation British-Chinese are now beginning to put a contemporary twist on the food and the presentation. There are new wave restaurants, like the Oyster Lounge in Warwick which offer a fusion of modern Chinese food with other Asian cuisines. At the Oyster Lounge (which despite its authentic Tudor frontage has a sympathetic but contemporary interior) this has resulted in an exciting menu featuring such interesting dishes as Aubergines and pancakes, Malaysian Organic Chicken Fried Rice, Duck Thai Mein, Chinese Grilled Salmon with Asparagus, Seabass with Pak Choi and Chilli Paneer Salad. These dishes retain enough familiarity for us to recognise their source but at the same time offer a new and fresh look at one of the world's great cuisines.

And for those of you who prefer what a Norfolk friend happily refers to as a belly-buster, you can plump for one of the very popular eat-as-much-as-you-can-fixed-price-buffets offered by restaurants such as the Oriental Star Buffet Restaurant in Leamington Spa.
