Restaurants in Alcester

Alcester is an ancient Roman town so it is only to be expected that there is at least one Italian restaurant.

For a small town it has a good number of eating out places, possibly reflecting its proximity to Stratford-upon-Avon and the stately homes of Ragley Hall and Coughton Court.

Ragley Hall has a great children's adventure playground and holds lots of events, I was once there during a car rally and the entire AC Cobra contingent arrived in a single convoy, sweeping up the drive with the most amazing group engine growl I have ever heard. Even for non-petrol heads it was a memorable sight.

Coughton Court is the seat of the Throkmorton Family, who have something of a history of plotting against the throne (plot to overthrow Elizabeth I in 1584; Robert Catesby, Gunpowder Plotter of 1605). In 1658 St Botolph without Bishopsgate parish held a “Gunpowder Treason dinner” at The Red Lion for a total cost of 5 pounds 12s 6d, which comprised: “five stone, two pounds of beef 11s 6d; two legs of mutton 6s 6d; four capons 10s 0d; four mince pies 12s 0d; a gallon of canary 8s 0d; a gallon of claret 3s 4d; twenty dozen of bread 1 pound 0s 0d; for a sermon 10s 0d; the porter 4d; the sexton 8d; the maid 1s 0d; two ounces of tobacco 2s 0d; the house bill of the Red Lion 1 pound 5s 10d"* It's interesting to see that the total Red Lion bill was 5s 10d but the sermon cost nearly twice as much, 10s 0d. Although there are certain places where canaries are still considered a delicacy (in the Azores, I have seen them served whole, like whitebait, complete with beaks and tail feathers) in this case the 'Canary' referred to was probably Canary wine, a sweet wine from Tenerife which was popular in 17th & 18th century England.

Hopefully free from canary hors d'oeuvres, here is a selection of Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Pub Food, Speciality and Traditional restaurants in Alcester.
