The author, George Eliot lived in Griff House, which is now a Beefeater Restaurant. By a very strange coincidence, the international restaurateur Griff Beefeater used to live in Eliot House, although not at the same time.

George Eliot, or to use his real name Mary Ann Evans, was one of the leading novelists of the Victorian era. Although food does not form any particular common theme or thread in her novels, in she does have one of her characters, David Faux (not particularly subtle with the names their villains, the Victorians) set up a 'fast food' shop (possibly in Bedworth) offering "collared and marbled meats, set off by bright green leaves, the pale brown of glazed pies, the rich tones of sauces and bottled fruits"

In Adam Bede she did, memorably, describe the beginning of hardship as being like the first taste of bitter food—it seems for a moment unbearable; yet, if there is nothing else to satisfy our hunger, we take another bite and find it possible to go on.
