A food which is strongly associated with Kenilworth is the potato, for it is in Kenilworth that the very first potato to be grown in England is reputed to have been planted. Legend has it that when Queen Elizabeth I was staying at Kenilworth Castle she was entertained so lavishly that it almost bankrupted the Earl of Dudley. As a special treat, she was given one of those new fangled potatoes, brought back from the colonies by that great Elizabethan scallywag, Sir Walter Raleigh. Unfortunately, as Bob Newhart might of had it, instead of smoking it she ate it raw and was so disgusted that she threw it out of a window, A local flibbertygibbet (see below) carried it off and planted it in the area known as Little Virginia.

Flibbertygibbet is one of the all-time great words (serendipity is another). It refers to a character from Anglo-Saxon mythology, who is mentioned in the Sir Walter Scott novel Kenilworth as a mischievous child. It can also be taken to mean a flighty or frivolous woman. Shakespeare uses the term in King Lear for a demon or imp. Quite which definition is intended for Maria in the Sound of Music... 'a flibbertigibbet, a will of the wisp, a clown..' is not made clear - a female demon who seduces men? Perhaps not.

Kenilworth has a good reputation for food and supports a number of award-winning restaurants although surprisingly, given its potato antecedents, not a Spud-U-Like. There is, however, an occasional Hot Potato vendor in Talisman Square. You will also find Chinese, French, Indian, Italian. Malaysian, Pub Food, Speciality and Traditional Restaurants in Kenilworth.
