Restaurants in Leamington Spa
In English historical terms, Leamington Spa (or, more properly, Royal Leamington Spa) is virtually a 'New Town' and until the late 18th century existed only as a small village (Leamington Priors). Then mineral saline springs were discovered and by 1814 the Royal Pump Room and Baths were opened, making Leamington one of the most fashionable Spa towns in England. The Pump Rooms no longer operate as a spa, but they have recently been refurbished and now incorporate Tea Rooms, Tourist Information Centre, Library, Museum and Art Gallery, which includes displays by artists such as Damien Hirst (I think that 'art' has failed if it has to be explained and, for some reason, the Hirst exhibits seem to have quite lengthy explanations - or if they don't, they should because they are quite incomprehensible to me). 24 years after the Pump Rooms were opened, in 1838, a proclamation was made from the balcony of the Regent Hotel in the Parade that Queen Victoria had granted Leamington its 'Royal' status.
This is undoubtedly one of the best places in Warwickshire for eating out, and Restaurants in Leamington Spa offer an extensive range of types of cuisine and style of restaurant.. from 2nd mortgage-posh to belly-busting eat-as-much-as-you-can for £9.95 buffets.

| This month's featured Restaurant in Leamington Spa is The Restaurant in the Park within the award-winning Jephson gardens (Royal Horticultural Society Best Park in Britain 2004) and adjoining the temperate glasshouse (featuring exotic plants from around the world). It is operated by the same company that runs the excellent cafe in the Royal Pump Rooms and the 'Aviary' cafe, also in Jephson Gardens (small word of advice to the Aviary - serve your coffee in china not cardboard). Expansive walls of glass bound the restaurant on two sides giving superb views across the river on one side and the ornamental lake with fountains on the other. Open seven days a week from 10am the restaurant offers an excellent choice ranging from Morning Coffee with homemade pastries through to a delightful selection of international main course dishes and desserts. On those bright summer afternoons enjoy Afternoon Tea or a leisurely bottle of chilled white wine as you watch the world go peacefully by from the outdoor terrace. Sunday Lunch is a real must….. with Sally’s Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding reputed to be 'legendary' and there is always a Children’s Menu available. The Restaurant has a good selection vegetarian options, baby changing facilities, high chairs and extremely good access for the disabled. I've eaten Sunday lunch there and it certainly was very good. And it is a great place for coffee and cakes or a light lunch, particularly if the weather is good enough to allow you to sit on the terrace. |
