Rugby is of course famous throughout the civilised world for its school where, in 1823, William Webb Ellis is reputed to have invented the game of Rugby Football - a game played by men with odd-shaped balls (anon: seen on car-bumper sticker) - when he picked up the ball and ran with it. The oval rugby ball, as we know it today, was not invented for a further 47 years by Richard Lindon, an Englishman, for as another great Englishman, Peter Pook, pointed our, who else but an Englishman could invent an oval ball? Rugby School is also the setting for the novel Tom Brown's Schooldays. Other alumni of the school include:
Rupert Brooke, the World War I poet who penned the immortal words If I should die, think only this of me: | That there's some corner of a foreign field | That is for ever England.. ironic that he should die of an infected mosquito bite;
Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, who was regularly banned from local cafes for ordering 'mock turtle' soup and then running away shouting that he was late, he was late for a very important date;
Harry Paget Flashman of Tom Brown's Schooldays fame - one of literature's great bully's and now brought dramatically back to life in the novels of George MacDonald Frazer.

Vermillion's philosophy is to provide good quality food prepared with an emphasis on flavour and simplicity. All produce is sourced from suppliers with a commitment to provide the very best ingredients. Seasonal fish arrives from Cornwall daily and beef, pork and lamb are reared locally by small producers. Menus are changed monthly to allow for seasonal variations and to keep regular diners (and the chefs) excited.
