Although it is 75 miles from the nearest sea, in 2005 Shipston converted itself into a 1950-style seaside town and was renamed Shipston-on-Sea. It attracted national and international publicity from as far away as New Zealand, and people came from far and wide. The top attraction proved to be the beach which hosted a sandcastle competition and beach volleyball. There was also punch & judy, belly dancing, sticks of rock, oyster sellers, sea-shanty singers, camels, music, model boats, lifeboats, Sea Scouts and an “Alternative Deckchair” competition. The Flock of Seagulls specially imported for the opening ceremony, unfortunately turned out to be the 1980's synopop group rather than anticipated seabird variety of the genus Larus. Eventually, however, visitors saw through the ruse and it has now gone back to being a charming, if somewhat sleepy Cotswold town,
Many years ago, on the way back from a successful business meeting in London, we stopped at The Old Mill Hotel & Restaurant for a celebration dinner. Oh, how witty we were in those days, drunk on the heady wine of success and merrily quipping "bring us your finest bottle of Chateau Briand, patron". If it is half as good as it was then, it is most certainly worth a visit. And the Chateaubriand was very good, thick and juicy, served with a nice bottle or two of Gevrey-Chambertin.
