There is certainly no shortage of restaurants in Stratford-upon-Avon but, considering that the town gets 8 million visitors per year, there are perhaps not as many as one might expect. On the bonus side, there are also remarkably few overtly 'Shakespeare' themed eating out places either. Call me Bottom and give me ass's ears but I really would have expected at least one restaurant called 'As you Like It' or a Fish & Chip Shop called "Friar John" (Romeo & Juliet), and somewhere in the town there really ought to be a butcher's shop called "Dick the Butcher" (Henry VI Part II). However many restaurants there ought or ought not be, there is at least a very good choice of options, from Bistro to Thai.

There are not as yet very many pavement cafes in Stratford town and, with some notable exceptions, even fewer places to sit out and enjoy a coffee or snack along the banks of the Avon. The Thai Boathouse has an enviable position overlooking the river (being, as the name might suggest, an old boathouse). The best known waterside hostelry is probably the 'Dirty Duck', which members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, are sometimes said to patronise (however, it is a small park and road away from the actual river bank). Closest to the river, The Countess of Evesham is a cruising barge restaurant which plys its way up and down the river while you eat, drink and be merry (not, for once, a quote from William Shakespeare but from his biggest rival, the bible (Ecclesiastes 8:15)

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is about to be rebuilt so, hopefully, they will use their wonderful river frontage to provide a range of options - coffee house, bistro, restaurant - to allow the general public, as well as theatre-goers, to enjoy the views and ambience of the riverside.

This month's featured Restaurant in Stratford-upon-Avon is The Baraset Barn, just down the road in Alveston. The Baraset Barn is one of those British country gastro pubs you won't forget. The chef takes great pride in his work, using only the finest ingredients. Fresh herbs are imported from France and the best meat and vegetables ensure top quality fare at all times. The wide-ranging menu features old classics, new dishes and succulent daily seafood specials. It's an exquisite choice, supplemented by special lunchtime offers, providing great value. Baraset is open seven days a week from 1100 hrs to midnight, Monday to Saturday and till 4 o'clock on Sundays. Having been to the Baraset several times - the first couple of times in its original incarnation as a very up-market restaurant and more recently since it evolved into a gastro-pub - it is a great place to visit, either for a meal or for a coffee in the conservatory or on the terrace.
