Despite being the county town, Warwick was for some time the dowdy spinster sister to its more glamorous party-going siblings, Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon. As with the Cotswolds, this period of neglect has proved to be a blessing in disguise as it has allowed the town to escape the High Street homogeny that is the blight of most town centres. As a consequence, Warwick has managed to retain a sort of individual charm and avoid highstreet-itis, with only small incursions by the likes of Woolworths and Boots. It has also got quite a nice castle.

Considering how many British holiday makers go to to Spain, there are remarkably few Spanish restaurants in Warwickshire. Although, on further consideration, where would you rather be right now, sitting on the M40 or on a beach in Spain? Presumably, Spanish restaurateurs feel the same. However, as a theory, this doesn't really doesn't explain the presence of French, Italian & Thai restaurants.

Anyway it's nice to at least see one Spanish restaurant in the town, Catalan in Jury Street and one Turkish Restaurant, Aubergine in Smith Street.

FEATURED RESTAURANT

This month's featured Restaurant in Warwick is The Saxon Mill, just out of town at Guys Cliffe. The Saxon Mill is an ancient water mill building which has been sympathetically but contemporarily restored (from the horror that was the Harvester) with an open plan, stylish interior, featuring open kitchens, stone fired ovens and log burning fires, offset by beautifully landscaped decking for alfresco dining. The menu is simple but up-to-the-minute, with lots of comfort appeal, with homely things like pizza, steaks and pasta as well as contemporary, global touches to keep things lively. The wine list contains well known favourites, alongside little numbers from around the world. The Saxon Mill enjoys unrivalled views over the river and Guys Cliffe. Over the summer months you can meander the day away enjoying fine food and chilled wines and beers, forgetting about the worries of work. The atmosphere at the Saxon Mill is relaxed, friendly and informal, while the overall impression is of a pub which is comfortable, light and open. The attention to detail and high level of service ensures a memorable dining experience. I've dined inside the restaurant and outside on the upper balcony, and have many times taken coffee on the terrace and in the main bar, and it is definitely one of my favourite places to idle away some time with a newspaper and a cappuccino.
