Hotels in Dunchurch
Dunchurch is a historic village on the outskirts of Rugby, and the core of the village has been declared a conservation area. There are many buildings of historical interest dating from as far back as the 15th century and some still have traditional thatched roofs. For centuries Dunchurch was an important staging post on the coaching roads between London-Holyhead-Oxford-Leicester. At one point 40 stagecoaches every day would stop here. Dozens of coaching inns were built to accommodate these visitors. Many can still be seen today and some have been remained as hotels. Many famous people throughout history have stayed at Dunchurch. Most notably, in 1605, the Gunpowder Plotters stayed at the Red Lion Inn whilst awaiting news of Guy Fawkes's attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. If he had been successful they planned to kidnap the King's daughter, Elizabeth of Bohemia, from nearby Coombe Abbey.
