Hotels in Kenilworth
Kenilworth is perhaps best known for the magnificent Kenilworth Castle, immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his eponymous novel. Other significant local landmarks include Kenilworth Clock, Abbey Fields and St Nicholas' Church.
A settlement has existed at Kenilworth since at least the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, in which Kenilworth is referred to as 'Chinewrde'. However, the main development of the town with Kenilworth Castle and St Mary's Abbey which were started by Geoffrey de Clinton II in 1140. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1541 the Abbey grounds, adjacent to the Castle, were designated as common land, in exchange for the common land used for expansion of the Castle by Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester and reputed lover of Queen Elizabeth 1). Only a few walls and a storage barn of the original Abbey now exist.
In the shadow of the castle walls is an area known as Little Virginia (which has recently been renovated and restored), where the first potato grown in England, brought back from South America by Sir Walter Raleigh, is reputed to have been planted.
