Hotels in Tamworth

Tamworth has existed since Saxon times and was once was the capital of Mercia, the largest of all English kingdoms. After the town was sacked by Danes in the 9th century, a wooden castle was built by Ethelfleda, Lady of the Mercians, the daughter of King Alfred the Great. In the 11th century, a Norman castle was built on the site of the Saxon one, and this still stands today. During the 19th century the breed of pig called the ‘Tamworth’ was bred and gained recent international fame when “The Tamworth Two” went on the run after escaping on their way to an abattoir (they were recaptured and reprieved).
